I come to Pagoda on the
Buddhist Dead Wanderers Day
English version by NGUYỄN HỮU LÝ
The word Mother looks like the spring water at source spilling over profusely
It pours into my soul to bathe and wash my hair in early infancy
Those pebbles have also eroded as time went by
As a son, how could I reciprocate my parents' favors!
In our poor family, Mother always endured hardships before and behind her
To grow beds of vegetables in mornings and to cast fishing-nets without let-up evenings
By winter nights, leafy walls rustled and got torn to shreds
To tightly embrace my body for my sound sleep
As for my Father, since the early dawn the wind-swept boat sail has wrapped up
His bare body became damp with sweat
During his existence, rivers and oceans, as well as the vault of heaven
Were attached to the water color at my age of discretion
Uphill and down dale, then in a very early day
My parents departed in their heaped up years of decrepitude
Stupefiedly feeling for my lack of mind
Why didn't I utter my pretty words yet?
Dear parents! One day when I was solitary
A glass of wine and quid of betel and areca nut would be many proofs
Of my far-away separation
Mother remained mute, and Father didn't speak bluntly
Foolishly, I'm stunned with regrets, now
Dear parents! The Dead Wanderer Season enters into festivities
I come to Pagoda and pray to Buddha for blessings
I entreat favors of the dead's souls, the embodiment of all fates
I wish for parents in safe and sound keeping within the Buddhist Kingdom
