Goodbye
English version by Ngo Da Thien and Song Nhi
Goodbye our dear mountains and hills
Goodbye ricefields with leeches, excrete dens, and bamboo forest and rattan fields
Goodbye winter nights in jail with some stacks of fires
Wrapped in six layers of clothing, however frozen to the marrow!
Goodbye nitrogenized fishes pond and salty soysauce jar
with innumerous worms and larvae
That’s the ration of a prisoner distributed and swallowed in a hurry!
What sins or crimes we committed, oh dear Mother Country
Men treating to men or to horses and buffaloes?
We’re leaving today and you... remain stay
In this deserving compassion, what can we say
Then, night by night around arundinaceous canes and reed fields,
Errant haunting souls moaning the patriotic whispers late at night
It’s all over, dear souls of intimate friends!
Be support us to the South safe and sound by train
This national hatred’d will be there for millennium
Our descendants, through generations will perceive this and in action
Going back home in the South, even though inside or outside the jail
The rice’d be enough twice a day, goodbye to the bugs and worms we can say
No long suffer the coldness beneath the Fansipan
No crossing the forests of bamboo and rattan
And escaping the severe death in wait at every moment
We’ll remember the last words of thee
And strive as long as our country being in great calamity
This long lasting storm will be soon in end
And springs’ll be bright for ever on our dear homeland
