Drinking foreign wine in exile,
I grieve about the former spring
English version by NGUYỄN HỮU LÝ
Tearing a sheet out of a calendar, the spring day is appearing
In America, the spring day seems always sorrowful as myself
Living far-away from my homeland one more spring
It snows in the strange land and chills my heart in this side
Well, why ever is the spring rain so doleful?
In California - in my motherland - this is in the day-time, that, at night-time
This morning, for reasons best known to myself, I thirst for some drinks
That your helped me to a few glasses of old rice alcohol
Eating Chinese onions - I emptied them at a gulp
Together with you, I got tipsy - amidst the native land welkin
Alcohol in those days and you - with charming love
Wine in these days is solitary - beside the exiled way
Here, spring! Who does long for the native land?
O, my present life abroad in spring - is similar to a cluster of drifting clouds!
Alcohol of former days was shaking - and fretting with an obsessive longing
Wine of nowadays is cold - and excessively far-away
Holding a glass of wine, it reminds me of the vernal season
I reminisce about the glass of rice alcohol of the past that merrily animated my lungs and liver
Wine'll lead me to revisit villages
With blabbering wishes and bragging greetings
Right now, far distant from my fellow - countrymen
How can I still get tipsy - and burst into an uproar of the entertained alcohol
Drinking wine in springtime in exile
Welling up drop by drop in my eyes - a tearful flow uninterruptes by the painful sobbing
Drinking wine in foreign land to alleviate my boredom
I do not expect wine'll rouse a wrench in my soul
