Hương tình Cà Mau
DƯƠNG QUÂN
Thuở ấy một lần xa phố cũ
Tôi rời đô thị đến An Xuyên
Chân trời cuối Việt xa thăm thẳm
Không có người thân, chẳng bạn hiền
Là chuyến độc hành, không tiễn biệt
Hành trang chỉ một xách tay vừa
Nhưng sao thấy nặng niềm thương nhớ
Trời thủ đô buồn trong nắng thưa
Tôi đến An Xuyên lòng khắc khoải
Những trưa gà gáy gọi hoàng hôn
Những chiều gió biển đùn mây xám
Gợi tiếng sầu dâng tận đáy hồn
Những bước chân mòn qua phố vắng
Những con đường cũ nặng suy tư
Hững hờ rượu lạt, cà phê đắng
Khói thuốc nào say buổi tạ từ
Khi cánh chim bay là xóa dấu
Cành khô cũng mất vết chia ly
Chỉ đau là tiếng kêu quằn quại
Hẹn ước nào ai tiếc được gì
Sự nghiệp vẫn đi tìm trước mặt
Nụ cười không nở cuối mùa thương
Mai sau ai biết về thân phận
Sỏi đá thà cam vạn nẻo đường
Dẫu thế, Cà Mau không phụ khách
Có rừng, cũng có đất phù sa
Cầu tre, nước chảy, cô nghiêng nón
Tình ái An Xuyên vẫn đậm đà
Gặp em vào buổi ban sơ ấy
Chung chuyến đò qua ghé bến quê
Tôi chép câu hò đem đến tặng:
"Cà Mau đi dễ, khó quay về"
Em hẹn chèo ghe ra họp chợ
Tôi chờ, trưa nắng, bóng sông trôi
Cắm sào, che nón, em cười nụ
Lòng ngỡ rằng em nói vạn lời
Nhà em có
mảnh vườn rau nhỏ
Uống nước trời mưa, gạo giã tay
Tuổi mẹ như vừng xôi nếp một
Cha già như trái chín cây
Hái rau đem bán lo tiền chợ
Mót củi rừng thưa, nhún bếp cơm
Cha mẹ tuổi già, con gái muộn
Tảo tần ngày tháng đắp công ơn
Em từ Tắc Thủ qua Kênh Xáng
Xuống khỏi Dòng Kè, ra Tắc Vân
Tôi dưới Tân Thành lên chợ quận
Mua quà xin gởi biếu song thân
Mỗi lần tan chợ, ghe xuôi nước
Áo trắng em về khuất cuối sông
Tôi tự hỏi lòng sao chẳng gởi
Cho em trọn cả trái tim hồng
Trở lại Tân Thành thương Tắc Thủ
Đường dài, sông rộng, nắng chang chang
Mái chèo có mỏi bàn tay yếu?
Má đẫm mồ hôi có võ vàng?
Mơ ước trời luôn thêu nắng đẹp
Mưa hòa, gió thuận, khắp nơi vui
Đất lành, hoa nở trên gai góc
Cho gái Cà Mau điểm nụ cười
Từ đó tôi yêu miền cuối Việt
Yêu đôi mắt đẹp, cổ tay tròn
Áo bà ba trắng, môi cười nụ
Yêu gái Cà Mau vẹn sắt son

Fragrant love of Ca Mau
English version by NGUYỄN HỮU LÝ
At that time, the first time far-away from my former streets
I left the city for An Xuyen
The horizon at the end of the Viet country appeared in the very long distance
Neither close relative, nor kind friends
As one of my alone voyages without last farewell
I had only a handbag as personal luggage
But I didn't know why I had greatly compassionate feelings
The capital city sky was melancholy under the mild sunshine
I came to An Xuyen anxiously in my heart
The cock-crows at midways called upon the twilight!
The eventide sea-winds pushed on the gray clouds
To arouse sorrowful voices raising from the very bottom souls
The shaky footsteps passed through the desolate city
The former streets were full of meditative mood
Indifferent to the unsavory wine, bitter coffee
What tobacco smoke could intoxicate the parting meeting
When the bird flew about, it meant to erase traces
Dry branches also had lost all separation stains
Only sufferance could let out writhing yells
What regrets did anybody feel about a taken pledge?
The works were always found in front of us
The smiles were never flickered at the end of a loving season
Nobody shall never know about his fate later on
Pebbles and gravels resigned themselves to ten-thousands of ways
Ca Mau didn't repay guests with ingratitude, though
It had forests, also the alluvial soil
The bamboo bridges, the running flow, the girl wearing obliquely her conical palm-leaf hat
The An Xuyen girl's love was still charming
Meeting her at that prime moment
crossing over the same ferry-boat with her to the homeland riverside
I copied a heave-ho line to dedicate to her:
"Ca Mau is easy to leave, but difficult to turn back"
She promised to row a boat for the market meeting
I was waiting, at a sunny midday, with the river's drifting shadow
To stake the pole, cover the hat, she smiled
My heart believed wrongly that she'll speak ten-thousands of worlds
There was a small vegetable garden in her house
She drank the rainy water, ate the rice pounded with a pestle
Mother's age was similar to a steamed glutinous rice
Father's old age was like a ripe fruit on tree
To pick vegetables selling for market expenses
To collect the firewood at the sparse jungle to kindle a fire for cooking
Old-aged parents, with their daughter late in life
She contrived well days and months to pay her debts of gratitude
She passed from Tac Thu through Canal Xang
Went down Dong Ke to Tac Van
I went from Tan Thanh to the district market
To buy some gifts offered to my parents
Everytime the market was dispersing, the boat down streamed the current
Her white robe was hidden from view at the end of river on her return
I asked myself why I didn't send her
My whole rosy heart
Returning to Tan Thanh, I loved Tac Thu
With its long road, wide river, and its weather under the blazing sun
Did the oar have a weary and weak hand?
Cheeks were soaking in sweat, did you have wasted time?
I wished that the weather could always have embroidered a nice sunshine
Clement rains and favorable winds could expand pleasantly everywhere
Good earth could blossom flowers in thorny springs
To let Ca Mau's young lady smile
From then, I loved the final part of my Viet country
I cherished the pair of eyes, the round wrist
The white South Vietnamese countryside's pajamas, and lips flickered with smiles
I loved the Ca Mau's young ladies completely with constant emotional ties.
