tự do nào không khơi máu thắm

English version by NGUYEN HUU LY
In waking up this morning, I see my left eye
incessantly winking
Is it certainly a pleasant feeling just stationed on
my eye-lash?
Is it my darling’s news which has just reminded me
of many very melancholy days
and months of separation?
Or just of my children’s acclaimed voice
That sounds like recent lovely bird twitterings
In a spring garden in the early morning
Frustrating from my wild subconsciousness
Or from the soul of a wavy sea in autumn
Full of adventures, I suddenly recall my homeland
in nostalgia
The forgotten olden road with horse traces has evoked
my memories attain
To wipe away the bad time which has shut tight
my returning path
Is it true, my darling?
How many times has the earth rotated its cycle of life
and death?
Rainy life falls down on mountain peaks of old trees
And on rocky and mossy-green waysides
Not any man of antiquity whose unknown age
On his hair that looks as white as silvery clouds
over the sky
A handful of rice and potatoes mixed with tears
To swallow every bitter and peppery grain at a gulp
To keep silent in shame
But have you ever known that!
It looks like the afternoon sunshine spreading all over
the rows of graves
That my friends have the regretful compassion
Also blurring the night gloom by murky smoke and dew
From the sorry plight of anxiety and melancholy
My body becomes exhausted
Through every miraculous wink of eye
Alas! The human fate of nothingness
On the branch of a tree beginning to spring just in bud
I feel nice as your lips
I have a feel for love as charming as my children’s rosy
cheeks under the new sunshine
To be close as the heart
But it seems very far to me
No happiness is not suffering
No freedom is carried through without bloodshed
Without hidden spite and grudge
Without towering hatred for the enemy!
How can you know that, my darling?
Through every very beautiful dream
I see your smile and my young child’s pair of eyes
Everybody looks bright as a star
But he is also more sorrowful than the star!
In the days of old
We always had a very common dream
That our happiness could be simple as a pretty rosebud
And a wandering peace would be charming as one of
the most wonderful couples of lovers
Does our homeland
Have a real peace, today?
Yet our olden dreamy flames have already been
extinguished, my darling!
Like birds’ notes in this morning
A wild bird type is coming and perching on
a decaying branch of the china-tree
It seems that there is a pleasant feeling
But not true, my darling!
It’s only a vague speck of dust
I tune musical notes about my old homesickness
Which was left from my dream last night
Heart-rending drops still have stagnated in
my desolate soul
A gloomy life awaited me an awakening
Nothing is left, my darling!
A regret about the lost chance flitted away…
