A river flow of memories
English version by NGUYỄN HỮU LÝ
The Long River flow, a river flow in my childhood
Where a passing boat was stranded at a summer midday
Among the former days' people, there were some who had not returned
Rhythmic heave-ho sounds stepped up without listeners
Oh, year after year, stones have eroded by constant dropping water
Ups and downs life's memories have never faded away
I remember the rain-stormy autumnal evening of July
It was depressed by thunders and lightnings in the transitional season
I remember the moonlit nights following Father to my Mother's village
Passing through the desolate temples and shrines in ruins!
Ammunition and bomb exploding sounds resounded from afar
I had pity on Father's great hardships…
I reminisced about the well I used to drink its water in my tender years
In every layer of mossy-green-covered rock in four seasons
I remember the former garden where I was growing up
And living silently without considering the advantages and disadvantages of the fact…
And so many more things to be remembered
The countryside's vault of sky was embellished by the moonlit night
Young ladies who captured the shrimps and returned home at night-time
Their frolicsome voices made the village more tumultuous
Then, I kept on living beside the dry river flow
I gradually grew up in wartime days and months
Batch by batch of people went to the battlefield in fire and sword
They left behind newslessly without return, so I felt rather perplexed…
Oh, the Long river flow! A river flow in my childhood
Please await my returning day to visit the river again
I'll tell you all about my wandering life
Which I always remain so many memories in my mind…
