A late moon on the wane
English version by NGUYEN HUU LY
Ling far-away from one's homeland was a total loss
To whom can I express my nostalgia?
In remembrance of the garden with ramrod-straight areca palms
Voices of children who were competing in their studies
The old mother in her poor cottage
Hunch-backed, she watered vegetable beds in front yard
In remembrance of the remote red-tiled school roof
Everyone who amused oneself under the summer banyan tree shade at the communal temple porch
A few green-floating herbs rose to the lake surface of water
Standing motionless, the deity temple reflected its image year after year
It couldn't be found the monthly 1st day and full moon day anymore
Followed merrily the mother to Pagoda
Sweet-scented lotus first bloomed in the beginning of the season
Under the moonlight, appeared vaguely the blurred paths of green grass
Around the towering bamboo hedge
Calmly, the rivulet water that ran eternally in its winding current
Roaming in the ricefields in every late afternoon
All around spread fragrant smell of the white as snow-paddy blooms
Here and there, songs and laughters were heard
The old-days landscape was still there but where were human beings now?
The mother's hair has turned hoary
Griefs have withered her tears and wilted her heart
That all! Such far-off images
Why did we have to recall them that only for our superfluous compassion?
From now on, traveling up-and-down in the wind and mist
We hope that all of our relatives could be safe and sound
Wandering our life through the long way world
Although be separated by rivers and oceans, we'll be back one day in a near future
Our soul is plentiful of our Motherland's images
As our follower, there is also the late unforgotten moon on the wane with us
