Tempest in my mind
English version by NGUYỄN HỮU LÝ
I spotted the picture of a woman wearing her mourning veil in a Vietnamese newspaper
Her snifflingly weeping small children are loosely grouped, at a place of separation
Around their father’s coffin, wherein his corpse is not shrouded yet
Amid the tempestuous atmosphere of Thua Thien
Thousands of arms (waving for rescues,) ten thousands of sorrowful eyes
Of the victims who are all immersed in stormy and roaring rains
And are all desolate and frightful in chilly winds
A mourning color overwhelmingly covers my entire homeland
Looking at the atrocities in the picture, I suddenly burst out crying
As I ever did it, in my childhood, when my Dad had just passed away
I strongly believe that the love of native land does exist authentically
That the bowels and the navel string have their common connections
And that the two separate elements, yin and yang, definitely co-exist under the same vault of sky
Such an instinctive affection is innated deeply inside the hearts and lungs
Of flying birds, and of ferocious beasts
They are compassionate whenever those of their own species suffer
By sharing food and clothing, and by reconnecting broken spans of bridge
Throughout miserable circumstances, one can find out the truth
Who hide the sun? Who are the selfish?
It’s time for them, today, to light some fire to warm up their hands
The love of homeland can somehow appear in case of deficiencies or sufficiencies
Let’s amass scattered fires and together with the sun, warm up (the flooding cold areas)
So that the birds can fly, the boats can set off farther from the front harbor
One after another, let’s fill up the catastrophic abyss
In order to diminish the long sighs, at every night
From the young kids who have just lost their father, yesterday
Myriads of wondering souls of those who died of injustice
Being floating in rivers or astray at markets
Want a few incenses and candles to be burnt and lighted again, for themselves, from our present living world
Our mothers, our younger brothers and sisters still save a little frailing sunshine
For their last miserable months and days
Their miseries, caused by natural catastrophes, by wars, by lacking of food and clothing
Are stockpiled up, which are higher than the Long Chain summits!
All the mothers, some are living in California, as well as others, in Saigon
Have been stunned at the tempest’s horrible news, and have been unmeasurably sad!
“When one horse gets ills, all others of the same herd refrain themselves from grazing”
Our act of sharing… reflects the very Humanity.
