Hai chữ tự do tôi vô tình đánh mất

The April Poem
English version by NGUYEN HUU LY
Should I begin this April poem
With my first days in the USA?
After wandering about over some strange places in this foreign country
I was stunned by the new way of life full of ups and downs
I dared not sob
Nor dared I smile
I only felt sorrowful, grieved, stupefied
Local people regarded me as a mere refugee
A few of them showed their compassions...
Some others looked down on me
Instantly looked down on me
Instantly, I recognized that to leave my home country
Was to deny what was the most precious to me
Freedom - in its fullest sense of the word was exactly what I unconsciously lost
While believing that I still held it firmly in my hands
Freedom was that I misunderstood
It became nonsensical to anyone who no longer had his homeland
During my very first night here, while lying in bed, I felt my nostalgic distress
Deeply infiltrating into my heart, causing pair to my soul
I worried whether my mom would have continued sobbing at that time
Or trying to sleep in order to dream of an earlier happy family - reunion!
My younger brother, perhaps, would have been standing hesitantly somewhere on a street - corner
To wait for me, his older brother, to return home despite of the fact that I had just set off recently
The young girl I loved still was in her blossoming youth
Did she ever return to visit our desolate hamlet?
I asked myself whether it was raining or sunny in Saigon, then?
Meanwhile, here, the snow was as white as the color of mourning clothes
Looking at the magnificence of others' towns and cities, I always felt amazingly aloof
And, at the same time, I always felt profoundly compassionate for the obscurity of my Saigon city, as well
I do remember even all its muddy and slipery streets
On which I regularly traveled twice a day
I have dreamed of being a tiny bird
To fly back there once for all before my death
The two-syllabled home-land always sounds infinitely dear to me
After a long quest of the true meaning of homeland
I have clearly revealed it, so far
My homeland is whatever I do not have, today!
