Referring to you
after the hurricane
English version by NGUYEN HUU LY
When you return, the hurricane passed over long ago
Trees kept still, the cloudy sky became serene
The waters ran back into their fixed river current
But people have already fled whereabouts in utter disarray till now
Your return could fully grasp the meaning of ebbs and flows
Consequently, your soul was deeply rutted with scratches
From where did the wind turn upstream the river flow?
To overflow your soul with a leaden expanse of the sky
You came here from the remote state of collapse
From warfare, and gloomy feud
That seemed to be sunk deep in the precipate past days and months
Just fancy! You didn't anticipate you would become miserable once more
In this country, your dreams have widely spread in ten directions
At present, you should " stand up under the heavens in ruins"
Even though life is extremely lamentable
Is it necessary for you to taste it so many times?
When you return, no more relatives have been found
Dilapidated houses collapsed into heaps beside your soul
Alas, my beloved! The ocean is still blue, the river wide
The road is large and smooth enough for your walking-tour once again
Millions of hands helped you escape from dangers
Since then, millions of air wisps have brought comfort
Transmitting to you by generous hearts
Though they have dissimilar language or different skin color
It is possible to make you biter and heart-broken
In remembrance of those who have close ties of consanguinity
Under their fiendish heels, your childhood was withered away in many times
Your childhood was indeed haunted by nightmares in every night
You gleaned the dry fields in scorching days
Potatoes, gruel substituted for rice, but not to have eaten your fill yet
Nowadays, fish and meat were really antique vestiges
Father landed up in prison, mother toiled and moiled in rain and shine
They reared their children in bearing great hardship
Who had got successive tempests, before their start in life
That blew frenziedly on the upside-down future
Then... after more than ten brighter years with morning sunshine
You felt snug as a bug in a rug among myriads of alien sentiments
Even though the hurricane Katrina today has brought about severe sadness
You still have here - for you - millions of unshakably faithful hearts.
