Nén Hương Cho Người Nữ Tù
HOÀNG THỊ CỎ MAY
A Burning Incense Stick
For A Woman Prisoner
English version by Nguyen Huu Ly
The yellowish dry sunshine has fallen to every scattered shadow on the courtyard
(As an elder woman), she was lying down there, calmly and doggo
Both of her scraggy hands dropped off in accordance with country fate
So many deep - seated resentments were still charge up without subsidence
In her first full flush of youth, she devoted herself to the good cause of her motherland
Her flow of Kings Trung' blood was flaring up brightly in her heart
Those ideals of hers - Freedom and happiness
As she wished for Vietnam, fresh and beautiful forever.
In her lifetime, she must has held sullen embraces due to her unsuccessful resolutions
In prison, she burdened with wretched - poverty on herself
Exhausted by hard day - labor - hungry and cold at night-time
To injure by inchmeal her devastating body with withered breaths of life
Giving her last recommendation on her deathbed, she clasped the two hands and uttered.
The use of this first kotow is asking pardon for the nation
The next second kotow is sending back to parents
The will is not satisfied! Oh, mother, I'm ungrateful!
Farewell forever, right! The captain, a woman prisoner
Her soul already separated from this world was always keeping chewing over the homeland.
So many writhing checked with emotion and heart-out
She didn't fully do her tasks yet, and then, say good-bye before her departure
Farewell forever, right! The lovable woman prisoner
Well, it was over to self-contain all pained and miserable circumstances
Never have a yellow national flag to cover the instant grave
It was buried hurriedly, nobody among her friends who gave a good send-off and followed the funeral procession
Farewell forever, right! The brave woman prisoner
Who stayed on here, at a deserted spot in the deep jungle
Surely at that place, she also smiled faintly!
Because she had already paid her debt of gratitude to the nation...
When the swamp-hen felt sad, it wept to call for the national spirit
As for my sadness, I would burn soulful incense sticks to commemorate the compassion!
