Along The Hudson River
At The Near End Of The Year
English version by NGUYEN HUY LY
Returning to this river current several times
On the far side of city, the street lights have already come on
The shower blurs the cold twilight
The weather at the end of the year gets a faster approaching darkness at dusk
The rain hides the long river from view the ferry landing
This place or that place, everywhere looks as if it were yesterday
The river is always a dewy and smoky area
Sad-looking as a reed-bed in the distance
It is always flickered waveringly by the anchored ferry-boat
And always the flock of sea-birds sees the eventide off
Why the former ferry-boat is not seen on the river?
To ferry passengers to here and there
The river is always immense and immeasurable
Where here is situated on the Perfumed River current?
Oh! To crave strongly for a ferry-trip in olden years
A ferry-trip that can transport the whole homeland
Oh! To crave strongly for a coming and going ferry-trip
In ferrying the girls across the river
They were student-bells who went through the Dongkhanh high-school
To let me burn up cigarettes in waiting for
Oh! To crave for a desolate place to sit
It is growing dusk, I miss you
Your house is located on that other side of the cold river
Yellow flowers of mustards are blooming profusely in the yard in the spring
Oh yes! The near end of the year in strange lands
The rain is boundless and the river, immense
Oh yes! It seems that the heart moisted with tears
The ferry-boat whistle sound depresses the twilight
That sound has urged long since
Oh, ferry-boat! Please give me a corner
I'll stand motionlessly as Tu Thuc's stature
And lonely as in the utmost extremity of solitude
Such like a person who has no homeland at all!
